Jim taught Second Life at the Container. I dropped in on a class before we went to Portland. By the time we returned, his students had made amazing progress. Winston is one of the participants in Jim’s Second Life Class.
Here is what Winston had to say about Second LIfe
Second life is a very interesting program. When I first saw it I was amazed. I stuck to second life because I love it and it can be great fun. So far I’ve built the container that we operate from and our toilet. I’m now working on a one-bedroom house with a veranda.
We went to Kingston to the Unesco Kingston cluster office and presented our work to an audience. The response was great. They loved it and I felt very proud. It gave me the courage to dig deeper into Second Life.
The Container could benefit from Second Life because it has created the first project in Jamaica to teach people about Second Life. Jamaica will also benefit because people can adopt it as another form of communication and meet other interesting people and share different ideas. There are so many things we can do in Second Life! To get more people involved we have to keep presenting it to them and showing them how it works and I think gradually they will understand what we are doing.
Second Life is just another skill in my book, one I love and would love to master!
Here is what Jim had to say about Winston
Winston was quick to see the power of building in Second Life. Despite the slow connection and the fact that the Container computers had just enough memory to run Second Life, Winston persisted. He was the first person to succesfully build a structure at the Container. He made a reproduction of the toilet building that is on the grounds near the Conatiner. Despite the complex angles on the roof he was able to build and accurately reproduce the real structure in Second Life. I really appreciated that Winston didn't take shortcuts that would compromise the authenticity of the Second Life structure. I felt it was important that visitors to the Container in Second Life get a fairly realistic idea of what the buildings look like there. Winston spearheaded the fabrication of the Container itself. I'm super excited that he has shown an interest in teaching others how to use and build in Second Life. In talking to Winston I learned that he is also an electronics technician and repairs televisions and computers. Perhaps Winston or Winston and I together can teach electronics at the Container one day. One of the things that I am interested about with Second Life is the possibilities of interfacing real world devices with Second Life. With Winston's skills in Electronics perhaps one day we will see him creating unique new interfaces to Second Life that go beyond the traditional mouse and keyboard interface.
